Chapter 14

Skylar

“So it’s true? You’re involved with a guy in the Steel Horse club?” Kathy, another teacher at school, came hurrying over to me on our lunch. I all but rolled my eyes at her. I knew gossip was prevalent in school, but it seemed the smaller schools in small towns were even worse than the big city schools.

“Where did you hear that?” I asked with a laugh.

“Polly told me. She and I are close, we talk nearly every day,” she said. She walked over to the window and looked out, then gasped. “There he is! Right in the parking lot! Wow!”

She stared out the window as though she was looking at a villain from a real-life movie, and I had had enough. I knew there was a lot going on with Bronx behind the scenes, and there were likely a lot of things he wasn’t telling me. But, I wasn’t going to make a spectacle out of him, that was for damn sure.

And with the way these teachers acted, he might as well have been some bad guy who was stalking me himself.

But to me, he had been nothing but a hero. He was a knight in shining jeans, riding a motorcycle instead of a horse. It wasn’t like he was some criminal doing my dirty work. No, they didn’t understand because they weren’t part of the situation, and I was trying to keep it under wraps as much as I could.

“Well, he’s been good to me, and like I said, he’s just helping me get through some things,” I said. I wasn’t going to let word get out that I was being stalked by the cult. Everyone knew about them, and no one wanted to have anything to do with them.

If word were to get out they were following me, I knew that would be even worse for my job. I just had to stay focused.

“I better get to grading these papers,” I said. “I’m sorry to wrap this up, but I should have some quiet.”

“Of course, there’s a few things I need to get to, too,” she said quickly. She stole once last look out the window. “That’s really something.”

I didn’t know what she meant by that, but I crept through the hall and made my way out to the parking lot. Sure enough, there was Bronx on his bike. He was reading a motorcycle magazine and eating a sandwich. He looked up and gave me a wave when he saw me at the window, and I smiled, returning the gesture. I was glad I was too far away for him to see the blush that rushed through my cheeks. That was the last thing I needed.

I tried to ignore the conflict swirling around inside me, but it was hard. It was hard not to admit that I was having feelings for this man, and even harder to admit that I had thought about bringing it up to him. But, I had to be smart about this. I couldn’t betray myself.
